Arabic: Abdulrazzak Hosain

Abdulrazzak graduated from Baghdad University with an honour degree in Arabic literature and has more than thirty years experience of teaching and management in both Ireland and Iraq. He has been living in Ireland for the past fifteen years, and during that time has taught Arabic and Farsi for beginners at Sandford Language institute; and Arabic language at Modern language society, Trinity College Dublin. He has been teaching Arabic in the Institute of education for the last twelve years to Higher level Leaving Certificate students, and now teaches both fifth and sixth year students

His wide range of knowledge and a deep love of Arabic helps Abdulrazzak convey this knowledge to his students and brings a refreshing approach to the explanation, clarification and tuition of the language.


English: Anne Deegan

Having graduated from U.C.D. in 1975 with an Honours H. Dip in Ed , Anne has over 35 years teaching experience. She has been teaching English in The Institute of Education since 1986. She is the author of a number of text books for Junior and Leaving Certificate including Ring of Words, The Kite, Prose Extracts for Leaving Certificate. Unprescribed Prose and Folens Notes on Macbeth and Hamlet. Anne believes that English is the most important subject on the curriculum. English is not just about points, English is for life and Anne tries to inspire her students with a love of literature that will endure and enrich their life experience.


English: Cian Hogan

Cian is an experienced teacher and author of French and English books for the Leaving Certificate. He graduated from UCC in 1994 and has taught English and French at the Institute of Education since 2001. Cian is the author of Poems, a new anthology of Leaving Certificate poetry, Rapid Revision French, a Ten Week Guide to preparing for the Leaving Certificate, Accent Français, a new approach to the Leaving Certificate oral and aural exams and most recently; Hamlet an ebook written for iPad. He has been a regular contributor to RTE’s "Living with the Leaving" series, Drive Time and Irish Times study guides.


English: Deirdre McCarton

Deirdre has been teaching English and EFL for over 18 years, with her students having achieved high grades regularly in the Leaving Certificate. She has also prepared students for FCE, CAE, IELTS, and other specialised exams. Deirdre writes articles on EFL for the Guardian and also sets Mock papers in English. She has made regular appearances on ‘TV Am’ to talk about LC English in their LC Bootcamp programme.


Irish: Clare Grealy

Clare was educated at Notre Dame de Missions, Churchtown, and at U.C.D. where she studied Irish and Politics. Clare has assisted in researching the Irish language and has helped in the translations of a number of texts into Irish. She has also assisted in the setting up of Irish language websites of late, and has been involved in teaching Irish to students of all nationalities who wish to study for the Law Society exams at Blackhall Place. 


 


  


Irish: Diarmaid Ó Tuama

Diarmaid has taught Gaeilge at The Institute of Education since 1974. Having taught part-time in The Institute of Education in the earlier years, he joined our full-time staff in 1998. He is the author of twenty five school books, as well as of Trátaí Úra a collection of short stories. He spends his summers in Gaoth Dobhair, where he works as Príomhoide in Coláiste Cholmcille, a popular Coláiste Samhraidh. He is also editor of Foinse sa Rang, a special supplement for Leaving Certificate students in the weekly newspaper Foinse.


French: Serge Berot

After graduating in English, French, Linguistics and Journalism in the University of Toulouse in 1969, Serge did his military service for a year in the paratroopers in Tarbes and Pau in the South of France. He came to Ireland 25 years ago where he did his Higher Diploma in Education in U.C.D. He has been teaching French in The Institute of Education for 13 years to Higher Level Leaving Certificate students. Military service taught him how crucial self-discipline and determination are in life and he has been trying his best to inculcate those qualities in his students. Serge has been acting as Exam Consultant for Authentik and a publication called "French Leaving Certificate Oral and Listening Comprehensions" which is currently in bookshops.


 


  


French: Corinne Gavenda

Corinne took her primary degree in La Sorbonne, Paris, before coming to Ireland to take her Masters and Higher Diploma in Education from Trinity College in Dublin. She is former editor of the French magazine and tapes Authentik, and worked in close collaboration with France Inter to compile material suitable for language classes. Corinne worked with the Department of Education giving in-service training to schools around the country when Oral French was originally introduced onto the syllabus of the Leaving Certificate.


 


  


French: Carol Oiknine

After completing her university studies in Paris VII University, Carol taught A-Level French in Belfast for one year. She then taught French in Dublin at various levels, including Leaving Certificate Higher Level, adult education and business French to Post-Leaving Certificate students, before joining The Institute of Education in 1994. Carol now teaches both 5th and 6th year students and believes that students benefit enormously from attending the two-year course. She has found that the highly dedicated 5th Year teachers do wonders in building strong foundations in each of their subjects.

 


  


 


German: Orla Ní Shúilleabháin

A graduate of UCD Orla achieved her primary degree in German, French and Irish and was awarded a 1st class Honours Higher Diploma in Education in 1984. Having taught at a number of schools in the greater Dublin area, Orla has been teaching German at the Institute since 1985. Orla’s students have achieved many accolades including 1st place in Ireland in a scholarship awarded by the German Government to study the language in Germany.  

Orla contributes to Exam Brief, RTE’s subject advice lines and RTE’s Countdown to 906 on radio and The Irish Times exam analysis. She has also worked as an editorial consultant for Folens Publishing on a number of publications including Klasse 1 and Klasse 11. Orla has a passion for German and brings energy and fun to the subject learning. Her classes are highly interactive and engaging and Orla is committed to bringing out the potential in every student. Orla encourages every student to develop their own passion for the subject and helps them to reach their full potential. This is reflected in outstanding results over 26 years! Many of Orla’s students have gone on to excel at German at University and 3rd level and a significant number have built successful careers working in Germany and further afield.

Spanish: Agueda Hermandez

Agueda has taught Leaving Certificate Spanish in the Institute of Education since 1986. She graduated from the University of Salamanca, with an honours degree in Educational Science. In 1981 Agueda was retained by the Spanish Department in Trinity College Dublin to prepare Leaving Certificate Spanish teachers for the introduction of the Oral element of the Spanish exam. Agueda was responsible for the Leaving Certificate Exam practice articles published by Authentik (1999-2001). Agueda brings passion and an intellectual rigour to the teaching of Spanish at Leaving Certificate.  


 

  

 


Italian: Francesca Garagnani Mc Auley

Francesca has been living in Ireland for the past twenty years. During that time she has taught the Italian language to Junior Certificate, Leaving Certificate, University and continuing education students. She also has extensive experience teaching Italian to members of the business community. Francesca has been teaching at The Institute for the past three years.
