Some Outstanding Teachers in The Institute of Education

Orla Ní Shúilleabháin German Teacher
Having graduated with an Honours H. Dip. From U.C.D. in 1984, Orla taught in a number of schools in the greater Dublin area. She has been teaching German at the Institute of Education since 1985. She contributes to Exambrief and a number of exam lines, and has contributed to R.T.É. Radio's post-exam analysis over the years. Orla assisted her former pupil Grace Martin in obtaining 1st place in Ireland for a scholarship to study German in Germany.


Jim Carberry Geography Teacher
Jim Carberry has been teaching Geography in the Institute of Education for over 15 years. He graduated from U.C.D. in 1970. He is the author of Senior Geography and Discovering Geography which are widely used in classrooms throughout Ireland. He has also been the author of the Geography section of the Irish Independent Exambrief since its inception. A former student of his at the Institute of Education was awarded the Gwenda Hurst medal for the joint highest marks in Geography in Leaving Certificate 2000.


Michael O'Callaghan Biology Teacher
Michael O'Callaghan graduated from U.C.D. with a B.Sc. (Hons). He received a M.Ed. in T.C.D. in 1991. He is a member of the Irish Science Teachers' Association and is a chartered biologist (C. Biol., M.I. Biol.) with the Institute of Biology, London. He has taught biology at the Institute of Education since 1978. He is the author of the Leaving Certificate textbook Biology, co-author of the Junior Certificate text, Science Probe, and a regular contributor to Science Plus and the Exam brief


Aidan Roantree Senior Mathematics Teacher
Aidan Roantree is Senior Mathematics Teacher at the Institute. As the author of twelve major maths textbooks, and a number of other booklets, he is acquainted with every detail of the maths course. He is also the editor of Science Plus, the acclaimed magazine for Leaving Certificate students of maths and science, and has contributed to the Irish Independent Exambrief supplement.

 

Jean Kelly Maths Teacher

Jean Kelly BSc Ed, Jean graduated from the University of Limerick in 1996 with an honours degree in Science Education specialising in Biology and Maths. Jean has a breadth of experience in teaching leaving certificate Ordinary level maths to students of all abilities. Jean has been teaching in the Institute of Education since 2003 and has developed an unmatched track record in helping students through the Ordinary level mathematics syllabus. Jean brings a refreshing approach to the explanation, clarification and tuition of the maths syllabus. Jean instils a passion for academic excellence, and empowers students as they strive to achieve their potential in all aspects of life.


Sandra Cleary Home Economics Teacher
Sandra Cleary graduated with a B. Ed. (Hon.) in Home Economics from Sion Hill.  She has been teaching in the Institute of Education since 1991.  Sandra also spent 2 years teaching in the Dublin College of Catering and was assistant to Mairín Uí Chomáin in the R.T.E. cookery series “Cuisine le Mairín”.  She has contributed articles to the Irish Independent Exam Brief since 1993. Sandra is the author of the recently published Leaving Certificate revision book, Rapid Revision Home Economics, part of the Rapid Revision series by Folens.

Pat Doyle Physics Teacher
Pat Doyle has taught Physics in the Institute of Education since 1982. He has been a regular contributor to Science Plus, a science and mathematics publication for the Leaving Certificate. He writes the annual Exambrief in Physics for the Institute of Education and has featured on R.T.É. radio during live phone-in programmes, offering help and advice for Leaving Certificate students.


Diarmaid Ó Tuama Irish Teacher
Diarmaid Ó Tuama has taught Gaeilge at the Institute of Education since 1974. Having taught part-time in the Institute in the earlier years, he joined our full-time staff in 1998. He is the author of twenty five school books, as well as of Trátaí Úra a collection of short stories. He spends his summers in Gaoth Dobhair, where he works as Príomhoide in Coláiste Cholmcille, a popular Coláiste Samhraidh. He is also editor of Foinse sa Rang, a special supplement for Leaving Certificate students in the weekly newspaper Foinse.


Serge Berot French Teacher
After graduating in English, French, Linguistics and Journalism in the University of Toulouse in 1969, Serge did his military service for a year in the paratroopers in Tarbes and Pau in the South of France. He came to Ireland 25 years ago where he did his Higher Diploma in Education in U.C.D. He has been teaching French in the Institute for 13 years to Higher Level Leaving Certificate students. Military service taught him how crucial self-discipline and determination are in life and he has been trying his best to inculcate those qualities in his students. Serge has been acting as Exam Consultant for Authentik and a publication called "French Leaving Cert Oral and Listening Comprehensions" which is currently in bookshops.


Corinne Gavenda French Teacher
Corinne took her primary degree in La Sorbonne, Paris, before coming to Ireland to take her Masters and Higher Diploma in Education from Trinity College in Dublin. She is former editor of the French magazine and tapes Authentik, and worked in close collaboration with France Inter to compile material suitable for language classes. Corinne worked with the Department of Education giving in-service training to schools around the country when Oral French was originally introduced onto the syllabus of the Leaving Certificate.

Claire Grealy Irish Teacher
Clare was educated at Notre Dame de Missions, Churchtown, and at U.C.D. where she studied Irish and Politics. Clare has assisted in researching in the Irish language and has helped in the translations of a number of texts into Irish. She has also assisted in the setting up of Irish language websites of late, and has been involved in teaching Irish to students of all nationalities who wish to study for the Law Society exams at Blackhall Place.


Tara Lyons Chemistry Teacher
Tara graduated from U.C.D. in 1991 and has been teaching Higher Level Chemistry and Biology for eight years. She has contributed to a number of newspaper articles on the Chemistry and Biology papers.


Seán Delap History Teacher
Seán Delap is a U.C.D. graduate in both History and Irish. He has been teaching History at the Institute of Education since 1990. He is a regular contributor to both the Leaving Certificate and Junior Certificate sections of the Irish Independent Exambrief supplement and has also featured on R.T.É. radio exam programmes. Seán is the author of the Leaving Certificate History articles which are published monthly in the popular Exam and Career.


Carol Oiknine French Teacher
After completing her university studies in Paris VII University, Carol taught A-Level French in Belfast for one year. She then taught French in Dublin at various levels, including Leaving Certificate Higher Level, adult education and business French to Post-Leaving Certificate students, before joining the Institute of Education in 1994. Carol now teaches both fifth and sixth year students and believes that students benefit enormously from attending the two-year course. She has found that the highly dedicated Fifth Form teachers do wonders in building strong foundations in each of their subjects.


William Murphy Business Teacher
William Murphy graduated with a B.A. (Hons) from DCU and a B.Comm.(Hons) from UCD. He has taught Leaving Cert. Business since 1990. William previously lectured in accounting in DCU and has extensive experience lecturing in UCD, NCI and GMIT for professional accountancy bodies including the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland.


Francesca Garagnani Mc Auley Italian Teacher
Francesca has been living in Ireland for the past twenty years. During that time she has taught the Italian language to Junior Certificate, Leaving Certificate, University and continuing education students. She also has extensive experience teaching Italian to members of the business community. Francesca has been teaching at the Institute for the past three years.


Mona Murray Science Teacher
Mona graduated from U.C.D. with an Honours Science Degree, majoring in Biology. She has been teaching full-time in the Institute for many years, inculcating a love of the subject to her students with outstanding success.


Keith Hannigan Business Teacher
Keith was educated in O'Connells C.B.C. and graduated with an honours H. Dip from Trinity College. He worked in the management industry for six years. He has been teaching Higher level Business and Economics for many years and has been part of the management team in his previous school.
