Course Details

Each class is a 4 hour block session.

25% of the total marks are allocated to orals at higher level and 20% at ordinary level.

These courses are structured to give students the confidence they need to obtain their highest possible grade.

To enable students to obtain maximum benefit from their Oral Preparation Course, students must attend a one-to-one mock Oral Interview. This interview will simulate  the Leaving Certificate Examinations conditions, will help to build confidence and develop oral examination techniques.

Students who enrol for this course will have access to a selection of specially recorded oral preparation listening materials through our website www.ioe.ie. These materials will support and reinforce the skills, grammar and vocabulary developed during the course.

The following subjects are offered for both Honours and Ordinary level students:

French (H/O)
• Outline of the key grammatical elements in the context of the Oral Examination.
• All personal topics covered with sample answers and general vocabulary.
• Methods to develop a topic and dialogue to enable students to increase marks awarded for communication.
• The abstract topics covered with reference to current affairs.
• Introduce, develop and increase interest in the document.
• Methods and skills to enable students to discuss and present their favourite book/film or TC programme.
• A review of sample interviews with emphasis on how the examinations are graded.
• A mock interview for each student.

Irish (H/O)
• Fáiltiú – each student will have their personal failte checked.
• Preparation and reading of prescribed poetry.
• Picture sequences – 10 will be covered in class with notes supplied on all 20.
• Personal topics covered in depth.
• All main 4 tenses covered with graded questions suited to both ordinary and higher level.
• Abstract topics / current affairs.
• A mock interview for each student.

German (H/O)
• All general questions will be covered with emphasis on how to develop effective answers.
• Main tenses examined i.e. past, present, future conditional.
• Option to discuss a film or novel.
• Picture sequences – explain questions – themes related to individual pictures.
• Project work with individual attention during/after course.
• Roleplays will be covered in detail with emphasis on communicative skills.
• Essential grammar required for the Leaving Cert Oral.
• A mock interview for each student.

Spanish (H/O)
• Personal topics covered with sample questions, sample answers and general vocabulary.
• An outline of key grammatical elements in the context of the Oral Examination.
• Methods to develop a topic and dialogue to enable student to increase the marks awarded for communication skills.
• A mock interview for each student.
